I just spent three nights behind bars.
Yes, IN A PRISON CELL!
Voluntarily. No scandal. No financial crime. Just a new experience I couldn’t resist.
I stayed at Hostel Celica in Slovenia, a former military prison turned into one of the coolest, artsiest, most inspiring hostels in the world.
I didn’t stay there because I’m a backpacker or because I was trying to save money. I chose it because I’d never stayed in a hostel before, let alone one of the only ex-prisons in the world transformed into a creative space.
The bars, the heavy doors, the cold floors… they’re still there. But now, the space is full of art, color, and culture. A place where people choose to stay.
And while I was there, something clicked. That cell reminded me of how many business owners live every day.
They left their jobs chasing freedom… But many are still trapped, not by walls, but by their lack of cash flow visibility.
The Trap of Self-Employment Without Financial Clarity
There’s a narrative out there that self-employment equals freedom. No boss. No clock. No office politics. No ceiling on income.
But in reality? Many business owners are not free. They’re cash flow prisoners.
I see it every day when I work with entrepreneurs and small business owners. They have:
- Invoices pending, unsure when they’ll be paid.
- Expenses growing, but no clear view of what’s affordable.
- Clients paying late, while bills pile up.
- No cash flow projections, just gut feelings.
That’s not freedom. That’s financial anxiety dressed up as entrepreneurship.
They’re technically self-employed, but stuck in a cycle of reacting, patching, and guessing if they’ll have enough next month. That’s how businesses slowly become prisons of their own making.
You’re “self-employed” but still trapped, reacting instead of leading.
Cash Flow Visibility: The Real Definition of Business Freedom
What Hostel Celica taught me is that structure isn’t the problem. It’s the lack of visibility that keeps you stuck.
In business, the “bars” aren’t your clients, your products, or even your sales. The bars are the moments when you don’t know how much money is really flowing in and out. When you don’t know how long your cash will last, whether you can afford to hire, or if you’re paying yourself sustainably.
The key to freedom isn’t more revenue. It’s whether you can see, predict, and control your cash.
And it doesn’t require fancy software or a finance degree. It starts with:
- Having a real-time cash flow tracker.
- Tracking payment terms and client receivables.
- Knowing your “minimum operating cash” at all times.
Cash flow visibility is your get-out-of-jail-free card. Without it, you’re winging it month after month. With it, you can plan, grow, invest, and finally sleep at night.
What About You?
Are you a business owner but still living behind bars? Do you know how much cash is flowing in and out of your business every week? Or are you hoping, guessing, and praying it all works out?
If this hits close to home, it’s because I’ve seen it too many times.
Your freedom isn’t in the sales you close. It’s in knowing exactly where your money is, where it’s going, and how to make it work for you.
And yes, here’s me behind bars at Hostel Celica, smiling, because sometimes the best financial lessons show up in the most unexpected places… And because I knew I could walk out anytime.
The question is: Can you say the same about your business?
